Further information

Around 1890, numerous wealthy Berliners moved to the Alsen colony on Wannsee in the summer with their families in a removal van. Among them were business bosses like Arnhold, Stinnes and Fassbender, but also the publishers Langenscheidt and Springer and the legendary doctor Sauerbruch. The famous painter Max Liebermann also had his villa here, which today houses a museum and is surrounded by impressive gardens that date back to the artist. Until 1933, christian and jewish families celebrated lavish and imaginative parties together in the Sailor's House on Wannsee. During the Third Reich, many jewish residents were expelled and Nazi organisations took over the vacant villas. The so-called Wannsee Conference took place in the Villa Marlier, where the deportation of the entire jewish population of Europe and their extermination were planned in detail. Today, this place is a contemporary witness of horror in a beautiful location. In addition, you will learn how the settlement continued from 1945 until today...
